The 5 Best Home Improvements to Make in Early Fall

The 5 Best Home Improvements to Make in Early Fall

Do you have a list of things that need to be fixed or updated around the house? Well, now may be the perfect time!

For a variety of reasons, early fall is a great time of year to make home improvements. The days are still warm enough to tackle outdoor projects or leave the windows open, the kids are back in school, and contractors may be more available for certain types of projects. Also, most remodeling projects can be completed well before the start of the holiday season so you can relax in your new kitchen or living room with family and friends.

So, Which projects are best to tackle in the early fall? Here are a few ideas:

1) Replace windows or doors

Take advantage of the perfect weather, and save yourself the misery of being exposed to harsher elements while you have exposed areas. You’ll not only improve the look of your home, you’ll improve energy efficiency and reduce costs in the colder winter months. While you’re at it, be sure to seal any exposed gaps and insulate areas that commonly allow heat to escape outside. Window and door frames are common contributors to this problem, as are uninsulated attic spaces.

2) Paint the exterior of your home

The temperatures are perfect for outdoor painting. A new shade will give your home a warm and inviting feel, improve overall curb appeal, and give you a renewed sense of pride in your humble abode. As a bonus, that new layer of paint can even protect your home against termite damage, extend the life of your siding, and prevent damaging mold and mildew!

3) Repair the roof

Don’t wait for ice and snow to turn a small headache into a migraine-size expense. Fall is a great time to get your roof maintained or repaired. A thorough roof check-up now will not only potentially save you money later, it may also increase the property value of your home!

4) Spruce up the gutters

Call a professional to clean, repair and protect your gutters, or even replace them with a newer style. Since clogged gutters and backed up water can cause significant damage to your home, this is one of the best investments you can make right now. In addition to protecting the outside of your home and your roof, you may also be protecting your ceilings and walls inside the home as well!

5) Seal the driveway

Particularly in New England, driveways tend to crack and buckle in freezing weather. Early fall is an ideal time to repair those cracks and get a new layer of sealcoat. Otherwise, water will continue to get under the surface causing more and more damage. Having a nice smooth surface will make cleaning, plowing, and shoveling a lot easier when winter weather arrives in a few months, too!
