Family Ideas for Winter Fun

Family Ideas for Winter Fun

This is a great time of year to live in New England! There are lots of options for family fun! Whether you choose to stay close to home or take a scenic drive, explore the outdoors or stay cozy inside, there are plenty of family-friendly activities to enjoy. Best of all, many of the activities are inexpensive or even free.

Sledding & Outdoor Exploration

After our next snowfall, bundle up and take the family out to one of the community’s favorite sledding spots!  Enjoy fresh air, exercise, and family fun all in one!

If you have family members who are too young or unable to participate in sledding activities, you could build a snowman or snow fort nearby.  Bird watching and taking a short nature walk in the snow are other possibilities to make sure the whole family is included.

Merrimack Valley Area Hills:

  • Alexander Carr Park, 14 Pierce Ave, Derry, NH
  • Drummond Playground, Johnson St., North Andover, MA
  • Reservoir Park, 349 Ames St., Lawrence, MA
  • Ward Reservation, 34 Prospect Rd., Andover, MA
  • Winnekenni Park, 347 Kenoza Ave., Haverhill, MA

South Shore Area Hills:

  • DeNormandie Dairy Farm, 65 Shaws Cove, Fairhaven, MA
  • Coast Guard Hill, 900 Ferry St, Marshfield, MA
  • Borderland State Park, 295 Massapoag Ave, Easton, MA

Skiing & Snowboarding

Is this the year your family learns to ski or snowboard? Even though there’s no snow on the ground yet, many local ski areas are booking up now for January lessons. Check out Bradford Ski Area in Haverhill, MA and Blue Hills in Canton, MA.

These two local spots are far less expensive than a trip to the mountains, and the slopes are perfect for beginners or intermediate level skiers.  If you’ve never tried cross-country skiing, that might be an interesting change of pace that feels like a nature walk in the woods.

Get Active – Indoors

If the air outside feels too frigid, but you’d like to get your family up and moving, maybe it’s time to try an indoor field trip.  It becomes even more fun when you bring friends with you!  Here are some indoor ideas for getting active:

Learn Something New

Learning doesn’t only happen in school.  Show your children how fun learning can be by visiting some of our area’s museums.  Here are a few ideas and resources to try:

Unplug for a Bit

Would you like to ban the TV, cell phones, and electronic games and toys for a while?  Mix up your winter activities with some planned “unplugging.”  Here are a few ideas to get the whole family involved in some old-fashioned fun:

  • Play a board game, do a puzzle, or build something with blocks/Legos as a family!
  • Get out the crayons, markers, paint, paper, scissors, glue and tape and do some impromptu crafting and creating along-side your children!
  • Take the family out to a place like Plaster Fun Time where the kids can have fun painting without making a mess in your home.
  • Visit your local library. Besides picking up some new books to read, ask your librarian what special events are happening at the library this winter! Many area libraries are hosting family story times, crafting events and more! You may also be able to find discounts/coupons for local attractions while at the library.

Admire the Lights

Besides driving around your neighborhood and viewing homes decorated with holiday lights, there are several larger light displays to enjoy! Some of our favorites are La Salette in Attleboro, MA and Edaville Family Theme Park in Carver, MA.

Don't forget that no matter where you are, you can always access your MVCU account through more than 40,000 fee-free ATMs nationwide.
